  • California

  • Fictitious business names are filed with the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's office in the county of the principal place of business in California. There is no state-level fictitious name registration.

    • If you do not have a place of business in California, file with the Clerk of Sacramento County.
    • You may need to register in multiple jurisdictions.
    • If you need state-wide registration, consider filing a California trademark instead.
  • Connecticut

    In Connecticut, trade names are filed in the town where business is to be conducted or transacted. There is no state-level trade name registration. Foreign businesses with an office in Connecticut should file in the town where that office is located. If the business has multiple offices or locations, choose the one that is considered to be the principal Connecticut location. If the business has no other connections to Connecticut, select the town where the resident agent is located.

    Trade name registration is required for LLCs, corporations, and other entities that desire a "doing business as" name. General partnerships that desire a business name that does not include any surnames of the owners and sole proprietorships that desire a business name that does not include their surname are also required to register a trade name. Trade names must be renewed every 5-years.

  • Delaware

    In Delaware, fictitious names are registered in the county prothonotary's office. There is no state-level fictitious name registration.

    Sole-proprietorships, partnerships, and other associations that do not want to include their surnames in the company name may be required to file a registration for a fictitious name. Legally incorporated companies and certain joint stock associations are not required to file a registration.

  • Georgia

  • In Georgia, trade name registrations are filed in the county where business activity principally takes place. There is no state-level trade name registration.

    • Domestic firms should file in the county of their legal domicile.
  • Massachusetts

    In Massachusetts, business certificate registration is filed with the city or town clerk's office. There is no state-level fictitious name registration.

  • Nevada

  • In Nevada, fictitious firm name registrations are filed at the county level (with the exception of Carson City). There is no state-level fictitious name registration.

     
  • North Carolina

  • In North Carolina, assumed name registrations are filed with the county register of deeds. There is no state-level assumed name registration, however, entities conducting business in more than one county can designate multiple counties with one filing.
